Welcome to Mbale High School, and thank you for taking the time to learn about us, whether you are a parent, an old student, or a young person hoping to join us next year.
I have led this school since 2018. When I arrived, we were dealing with regular student unrest, and it was holding everyone back. We made guidance and counselling the centre of how the school is run, and the change has been real. The strikes stopped, the classrooms settled, and our performance in national examinations improved soon after.
Mbale High School is an old school with a long history in this region. We opened in the 1960s as Pillar Secondary School, and for more than sixty years we have taught children from Mbale and the districts around it, including Bududa, Manafwa, Sironko and Namisindwa. That history matters to me, but it is the learners sitting in our classrooms today who keep me at work.
What I want for our students is straightforward. I want them to leave here able to think for themselves, earn an honest living, and treat other people with respect. We teach both sciences and arts, and we keep Lumasaba on the timetable because a child should never lose touch with where they come from. There is also football, athletics, debate and a number of clubs, because some of the most useful lessons a young person learns do not happen in a classroom.
I will not pretend we have everything we need. Our laboratories and classrooms are stretched by the growing number of learners, and like many government aided schools, our funding is tight. What I can promise is that we are honest about our weaknesses and clear about how we mean to fix them. With the continued support of parents, our former students and the people of Mbale, I have no doubt that we will.
